Totally agree - he really tried to modernize the church as best he could. Apparently he stacked the cardinals with numerous progressives so hopefully they can keep the momentum up!

Yes, that’s his small 2 room suite in the Vatican guesthouse (not the palace). For comparison, this article shows the difference between his quarters, the palace, and the homes of some arch bishops.
ETA: 2 room, not 2 bedroom suite.
Disclaimer: not religious at all…but in all fairness to Pope Francis, he was a Jesuit, rejected living in the grand Papal apartment, and chose to live in a super simple 2 room apartment. The first pope to ever do so.

No issues at all…super fast and reliable. There are great FOSS apps on F-Droid covering just about anything you’d need…the official app, cookbook, bookmarks, notes, news, etc. If you’re using an HDD instead of an SSD, just make sure you have a dedicated power supply for the HDD.

As a kid, I thought this was meant to test your sound system for the movie (aka lone CRT) and would blast it as loud as I could.
…and from a single meme we see the great divide between Gen X/Millenials and Gen Z. Poor Toto!
Best version by far -it’s almost like Tolkien reading it himself!

Artemis@lemmy.mlto News@lemmy.world•Thanks to a $1 billion gift, most Johns Hopkins medical students will no longer pay tuition52·11 months agoAfter all that school, I hear you 😅. But physicians in Canada, for instance, make substantially less than our friends to the south…for some specialties, even getting to $200,000 doesn’t mean much when you have so much debt, fees, and other business costs. It makes a difference given the huge need for physicians all around…such a sacrifice on so many levels with little payoff untill so much later. Couldn’t imagine the impact a donation like this would have anywhere, let alone Canada.
Artemis@lemmy.mlto News@lemmy.world•Thanks to a $1 billion gift, most Johns Hopkins medical students will no longer pay tuition14·11 months agoI get the hate, but as someone with some experience here, the amount of debt from a normal BA/BSc is miniscule compared to med school…like doesn’t even come remotely close. The amount of time spent paying that back for someone that doesn’t come from wealth is sometimes longer than they live…

Tonnes of tech/varied posts in my main subscribed feed and I’ve never noticed anything other than a minimal dose of drama…Facebook or Reddit are much more toxic in comparison which is part of the reason I left those places.

This recall/AI spyware was it for me though. Gaming has been a breeze for a while on Fedora/Linux due to Steam/Proton…such a great feeling to finally be completely rid of Windows!
Artemis@lemmy.mlto Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•What are some underrated episodes from each series?English9·1 year agoVoyager: S3, Ep. 23, “Distant Origin” is one of my absolute favs. It follows the team’s interactions with a not-so-alien race and the friction in their culture between science/academia and religion. I love Voyager overall, but this episode had me on the edge of my seat.
The Ontario government has had a few initiatives to push smart thermostats and my area just had our water meters upgraded to smart ones. I know nothing about the water meters, but I block the Google telemetry from my Nest Thermostat (unrelated to the gov’t program) via my pi-hole at least. By definition, if you sign on to the Enbridge thermostat initiative you are agreeing to send your usage. Not really sure of the impacts of this article on Canada, but pretty chilling nonetheless!

At the end of the day, Google profits from the data collected here, and Lemmy has a big community of users looking to avoid this. Tangentially, Google also has massive contracts with the Israeli military that have recently come under fire in the news…just another reason to use different app-improvement trackers if the goal is to truly boycott/divest, etc.
One step at a time…he was the most progressive pope ever…let’s keep it up!
