No fault divorce isn’t about assigning blame. They actually still do that in certain situations, such as adultery or abuse. No fault divorce means that the state will allow a divorce even if no one is to “blame.” Prior to that, you essentially needed a legal reason to get a divorce other than “I just want to be married to this person anymore.”

In case you’re curious why they might hate the post office so much, I suspect it’s because as a government entity it has two important attributes:

• A requirement for universal access
• At least some constitutional protections for privacy.

When you ship UPS or FedEx, you’re giving a package to a private entity. They are only bound by the contract they make with you. If they decide to start opening every package, that’s their right. The USPS has specific laws around when it can and cannot search packages, and generally requires a warrant.

I know it’s not what you’re saying, probably, but just to be clear: It wasn’t a good thing going just fine until the Germans took it too far. It sucked in Italy, too, and is always bad.

It’s the state of advertising tbh. If ads were still of the “Look, here’s a cool product” variety, or even the “Look, here’s people happily using a cool product” kind then the world would probably be a better place. Even targeting isn’t so bad, when it’s broad like “We want businesses to know about our B2B product.”

The evil in modern advertising is the overly specific targeting, the lying, the psychological tricks, and the way they seem to invade every possible space.

Have we considered calling it a tariff instead of a tax? Tariffs on all new plastic. It might work.

My favorite “we had to regulate this” is coal mining. You see, the larger a coal mine tunnel, the more work and time it takes. So smaller tunnels will be more profitable. So in some places they preferred smaller women and children, so they could make make smaller, easier tunnels. This one I only ever found one source on, but supposedly one mine owner noticed that snags on clothing were slowing things down in the narrow tunnels so he insisted on sending them in nude. Nothing more capitalist than naked coal mining children.

This is the only area I DO get. I don’t agree with it, but I can understand where they’re coming from. If you believe a fetus is a person, it makes total sense to vote against murder. And we aren’t going to win anyone over by framing it as just an issue for women. If it’s even possible to change someone’s mind on the topic it would be through education, not telling them that their opinion on murder doesn’t matter.

Okay but even if we forgive that, it looks like they’re taking a picture of the ticket while driving.

It’s mildly infuriating to me the people in this thread debating the meaning of the tattoos, because it totally misses the point. I don’t think we have enough information to be defending his character, and it DOES NOT matter at all. He could be a stone cold murderer and I still wouldn’t support extrajudicial deportation.

Basically, his character is all an irrelevant smoke screen. Stop engaging with it. It doesn’t matter. What the Trump administration did was illegal and sets a terrible precedent, even if the dude was a murderous gang member.

I disagree. He’s done enough that calling him a Nazi feels accurate to me. Or at least enough of a Nazi sympathizer that I totally support not doing business with him.

What I get frustrated by is justifying hurting the people that have his cars. Having a Tesla does not make one a Nazi sympathizer. You could maybe make the case that buying one today might, but even then I don’t think it’s justified attacking people for having a car.

If you want to be an extremist about it, hurt the dealerships and the company. Don’t go after people who are almost certainly not that different from you. The people keying cars just want to feel smugly superior to someone and feel morally justified for being an asshole, they don’t want to make anything better for anyone. If that’s how you act, you’re just a fascist with a slightly different ideology.

It’s not locked in such a way that only Tesla can do it, but it can be hard to find places that will service them. Especially smaller shops just don’t want to go through the hassle of figuring it out, and figuring out how to order parts and such, at least where I live.

Basically, it is going to depend on the shops near you and while Tesla doesn’t seem to actively prevent it I think they make it enough of a hassle for other shops that it may be true in some places that you can only rely on them for repairs.

I don’t think that there is a line we can draw, short of saying “no killing whatsoever,” that can’t be abused. If we say, “No killing unless they’re judged guilty,” then we leave it up to fallible lawmakers to make just laws, and fallible police and prosecutors to be honest and decent, and fallible jurors to try and turn this into a decision.

Or let’s say we make the rule, “Only fascists can be murdered.” But who decides if someone is a fascist? Is it someone who believes the ideology, or do they need power or authority to act on it as well?

Basically I don’t think there is a system of rules that could be implemented that would not kill innocent people as a byproduct, unless the rule is just “no killing.”

I think people are placing too much on this. Being registered is just sending a piece of mail with a checkbox checked, I think. You don’t even have to donate or anything. I registered as a Republican to vote in their primaries a long time ago, and I have literally never voted for a Republican candidate for any office.

I’m about a year in. One interesting thing is that older games seem to work better with Proton than they do on Windows. For example, after installing Psychonauts on Windows I had to Google why it wouldn’t load and try a few ini changes until I found what worked. On Linux, I just started it and it worked with no issues.

I started in IT before switching to development. I have CCNA, A+, and Apple Pro certifications. I run Arch at home, btw. But when I have to contact IT, usually for something that needs elevated permissions or bad hardware, I’m just another user. It’s mildly infuriating to go through all the steps again, even after explaining what I did. I get it, I really do, but it’s not fun at all.

Video games. Don’t get me wrong, there are still some great games, but the entire experience has degraded on average.

• The inclusion of obnoxiously long, often unskippable, intro sequences with studio credits and such. There used to be maybe a logo, maybe a very short sequence at worst, and almost always skippable.
• Most of the big budget games are intended to be a grindy slog, often to get you to spend more money on micro transactions. Fun takes a back seat to intentionally addictive but objectively less enjoyable experiences.
• Others are intended to be cinematic experience. Some of that can be fun, but sometimes I just want something like the old Sonic or Mario games that I can just pick up, play for a bit, and put down.
• Enjoy a game? You could talk to friends about it at school, or buy a magazine that talks about it. The experience now is largely an unregulated online wasteland… If you find a community, it may quickly be beset by people that you really don’t want to associate with, posting crap that no magazine ever would have published. Except for some of the funnier magazines, which may have published it just to rightfully mock the person.

The graphics have improved. In some cases the gameplay has improved. I don’t want to downplay those. I’m just annoyed with how the overall experience has gotten worse on average.

I’m with you in some cases. Who you take money from is not the same as who you give money or support to, necessarily. I think the worry in this case is that it’s a surveillance company.

Why pre-wipe? This feels like washing your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.

Oh that’s easy. Encryption is only legal when communicating with a business that is registered with the IRS and not when doing peer to peer. There, we’ve hopelessly broken digital privacy while letting the US government determine who gets to exist online.
