Have advancements in precision bombing technology ever led to an overall reduction in collateral damage to civilians? Is that even an argument defense contractors make, or are you just making it up?
Or has every study shown the exact opposite, that “precision” bombs actually cause more civilian deaths?
those bombs will kill far more than just a hundred people, far more than he can ever conceptualize. the consequences of those deaths will shape the world more than the extra microsecond an engineer could shave off of an internal Amazon function
The number of people defending Lockheed Martin here is staggering, but I guess I shouldn’t be surprised given the apparent makeup of Lemmy’s population
I’ll make this very, very simple: working for a well-known defense contractor who brags about making bombs is bad. Working for Lockheed Martin is unethical.
Working for a large corporation (Microsoft) that funds or supports wars (Israel) is also bad, but not as bad as Lockheed Martin, the company that actually builds the bombs that are bought with the dollars that Microsoft sends to Israel
Working for any company that could theoretically contribute economically to a war is bad, but not as bad as the previous two examples and is more or less unavoidable for working people
Paying any kind of tax (especially in the US) ultimately funds wars, and so isn’t good either, but it’s not as bad as any of the three above options, and no one can avoid it (except billionaires of course)
The “right targets” tend to be innocent lives as well. Besides, who said anything about precise weaponry? These days, it’s all about AI, where precision is actually not the goal
Hobbies, classes, sports teams, volunteering
If you want to meet women, take a pottery class, join a softball league, take knitting lessons, join a book club, volunteer at a local animal shelter, go to the library regularly, join a protest, join a running or biking group, or even look around on one of those meetup apps for activities in your area
Maybe your problem was that you only went to your gym and your bar, instead of trying to meet new people? The point is, it’s easy to get stuck into a routine, and swiping on Tinder often becomes part of the routine

There are no alternatives to these questions, these are the only ones asked about particular policy positions:
DJT08 Do you support or oppose each of these policies:
- Deporting immigrants who are here illegally and have committed crimes
- Undertaking a full—scale effort to find and eliminate fraud and waste in government expenditures
- Closing the border with added security and policies that discourage illegal crossings
- Banning men who have undergone operations and hormones to become women from girls sports
- Declaring that there are only two genders male and female in all government forms and programs
- Eliminating all preferences by race in the hiring and awarding of government contracts
- Freezing and re—evaluating all foreign aid expenditures and the department that handled them
- Placing reciprocal tariffs on countries that have tariffs on US goods

valtia@lemmy.worldto People Twitter@sh.itjust.works•How much resources are spent fact checking because bots like Mila Joy are lying?1·4 months ago“who stopped them?”. There are no checkpoints between Oregon and California
… actually, there are checkpoints along every major roadway into California that do check incoming vehicles, mostly to find and prevent invasive species from entering the state and affecting the agricultural industry, and more broadly to protect the environmental systems in California. There have, in fact, been legal challenges against these checkpoints for violating travel laws, but the checkpoints have remained. They’ve also been used to seize non-agricultural items like weed, weapons smuggling, etc. so emissions standards checking isn’t completely out of the realm.
Obviously, she’s lying and she doesn’t know any of this either anyway. But there are checkpoints to enter California.

I second this. There are some really great Discord communities to play on that I’m part of. Generally, it’s much easier to keep the creeps out by just banning them. It doesn’t have to be a Westmarches server, but any TTRPG server with an actual community that runs game on the server itself, instead of just another LFG fishing pond.

valtia@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•World's Largest Psych Association Passes Policy Supporting Trans Youth Care By Massive Margin10·1 year agoEven more than that, gender affirming care has been shown to be highly effective. Its efficacy rate is among the highest for any treatment for any condition. And as far as HRT goes, very few downsides or side effects. It’s why HRT is an approved treatment for a variety of issues in cis patients as well.
I heard somewhere that the regret rate for sex reassignment surgery is even lower than the failure rate of the surgery itself. The regret rate is lower than the regret rate for Lasik. That is incredible.
valtia@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Federal court rules Indiana ban on gender-affirming care for minors can take effect14·1 year agoBecause gender affirming care isn’t just surgeries. It includes things like hormone replacement therapy and especially puberty blockers. By waiting until after 18, they’ve already gone through most of puberty and its damaging effects to their body. If they still want to transition, then that’s tens of thousands of dollars for surgery that might not have been needed if they were allowed to start on puberty blockers at least.
There’s also the fact that banning gender affirming care is banning life saving healthcare. That is years that a person needs to go without receiving proper treatment. It’s wrong for the same reasons that banning any other medication for anyone under 18 would be wrong.
valtia@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Schools say dress codes promote discipline, but many Black students see traces of racism13·1 year agoThis has been debunked over and over and over again. Most dress codes don’t limit the kinds of accessories you wear, from bags to watches to jewelry. It doesn’t limit what phone you can have, what car you can drive, what food you can eat. Some have mentioned before that a lot of schools even have multiple tiers of uniforms to get fancier.
This only makes sense if you don’t think about it at all. There will always be bullying, and there will always be bullying against poor kids. The only thing the dress code serves to do is promote conformity.
Can we just rename this instance from politicalmemes to tankierants
